Lady Macbeth's Netflix Recommendation List:
Leap Year
Reign
Scandal
13 Reasons Why
Game of Thrones
Leap Year - This is a great movie about a woman who decides that she will propose to her boyfriend on February 29th in Ireland, because it is an old celtic tradition. When she does this she takes on the traditional responsibility of a man, to do the marriage proposal, in a heterosexual relationship. She unsexes herself in this way. Lady Macbeth also unsexes herself in her unsex me soliloquy. Lady Macbeth would recommend this because she would see herself in the main character of Leap Year.
Reign - This is a show about a queen who marries a king from another country. Later in the show the king starts having encounters with the supernatural. Lady Macbeth experiences her own husband having encounters with the supernatural as well, and they are eventually king and queen. This connects to the supernatural, which is a motif. Lady Macbeth would recommend this because she would see herself in the queen in the show.
Scandal - In this show the President of the U.S. has a wife who helped rig the election with others in his campaign team so that he would win. This is similar to Lady Macbeth because it was her idea to kill Duncan in order to get the throne. Both the President's wife in Scandal and Lady Macbeth helped their husbands achieve power and this is part of the motif ambition. Lady Macbeth would recommend this because she would see her actions as similar to the president's wife in Scandal.
13 Reasons Why - This is a popular show about a girl who commits suicide because of depression. Lady Macbeth commits suicide in Macbeth because of grief and guilt, and probably undiagnosed depression. The two characters are similar because they both committed suicide. Lady Macbeth would recommend this because she would see herself in the main character of 13 Reasons Why.
Game of Thrones - This is not on Netflix, but I had to include it. It is a show about the literal game of thrones, meaning to win the game one has to achieve the throne. A main character of the show wisely said, "In the game of thrones, you win or you die." This game of thrones is one that the Macbeth's took part in and both of them ended up dying, meaning they did not win. Lady Macbeth would recommend this because it is an amazing show and because she may see herself in any of the women who are competing for the throne in the show.
I really like your selection because they show thinking outside the box. The Leap Year connection was really creative, and I like how you relate it to the Unsex me soliloquy specifically. Your connection to 13 Reasons Why shows a really good understanding of Lady Macbeth, I completely forgot about her suicide in the face of the chaos towards the end. I like the connections you made here because they were all unexpected but showed a deep understanding. #yas boo.
